Ideengeber und Entwickler ist Thomas Marban (openBC), Gründer der österreichischen Agentur namens werk3AT Informations- und Mediensysteme. Viel muss man nicht verstehen, was die Seite bezwecken soll. Einfach anschauen, wird schnell klar. Eine Sammelseite der Tophits von Top-Seiten wie Digg, Google, aber auch Del.Icio.us, Youtube oder Flickr. Super easy, super simpel. Ich liebe PopURLs!

popurls is the dashboard for the latest web-buzz, a single page that encapsulates up-to-the-minute headlines from the most popular sites on the internet. With the only intention to get a quick glance on what“s happening on the web while keeping the common newsreader clean from all short-term headlines, popurls was launched in march 2006 by Thomas Marban who created similar services since the introduction of RSS and is often mentioned for having made the idea of the single page aggregator practical and presentable. Rather than a tool, popurls is considered as a gate to an editorial selection of the most popular sites on the internet, presented in a usable way. After features on thousands of blogs and newspapers like the NY times, Yahoo! named it best of the web to finally enter the 40 most popular sites of all time on del.icio.us. Today, popurls is frequented more than 30.000 times each day.

Und wird neuerdings von Federated Media vermarktet. Momentan gab es einen kleinen Bruhaha wegen einer Copycat-Site, aber Thomas sieht das super locker.

It“s clear people like these kind of sites and Popurls has seemed to start a chain or a class of these sites carrying on the concept. I“m not exactly sure what to call these sites as they are basically one page feed aggregators, but I suppose it“s safe to say they present the links, media, and search in a portal like fashion. So, I am going to call these sites „portals“? throughout the post rather then saying, „Single Page Aggregator.“? Please, if you know of a better name to call these sites, feel free to add your input.
Gratulation an Thomas, für die simple aber klasse Idee. Klar gab es vorher Aggregatoren-Seiten ohne Ende. Aber keinen, der sich auf die neumodischen Sites gestürzt hat und keinen, der es so simpel und übersichtlich gelöst hat.
